Chapter Seven
Kirsten
âEarth to Kirsten!â
I jump back in fright when someone snaps their fingers over my shoulder. I quickly lift my sweater up to my chin before turning around to face Sara. âOh, hi.â
There is a curious look on her face as she stares at my turtleneck, but she doesnât voice the question I read there. âYouâve been distracted all evening. Are you okay?â
âMe?â I feign shock, but itâs clear she sees right through me with the way she raises a single brow at my reaction. I fake nonchalance as I go back to restocking the refrigerator.
The truth is, I have been out of it all day, even one of my professors called me out on it in class this morning. Perhaps I should rethink the whole front-row thing if I am to spend the rest of the class daydreaming. I canât afford to be distracted at work, not even on a slow night. Itâs a good thing itâs Sara who called me out and not our boss.
âCâmon, Kirsten, you know you can tell me anything, right?â she says, placing a hand over my shoulder. âIf there is something bothering you, talk to me about it. Did something else happen with Johnny? Did you convince Hawk to give you self-defense lessons?â
My face heats at the mention of his name as memories of all the things he did to my body flood my mind. I chew on my lips and contemplate sharing about Hawk with Sara, but it doesnât feel right. Whatever insecurities I haveâand they are manyâI should talk to Hawk about them.
âItâs nothing,â I whisper, biting back the need to spill to her about what happened over the weekend and the fact that I am in love with one of the bouncers. I canât tell her that the reason I havenât moved from this very spot is because it gives me the perfect view of the employee entrance, and I am hoping to see Hawk walk in.
Heâs late tonight.
The man has never been late before, but tonight, he is twenty minutes overdue, and itâs getting to me. What if what happened over the weekend meant nothing to him? We havenât spoken since he dropped me off at home last night, and a part of me was hoping he would call or text . . . anything!
And now, heâs late! What if he asked Johnny to change his schedule so he wouldnât have to see me?
âKirsten, I can tell you are not okay, and Iâve had regulars ask if something is wrong with you,â Sara says. âYouâre always smiling and friendly with everyone, and today, youâve barely looked at anyone. You know you wonât get any tips if you keep ignoring the customers.â
Her words bring me pause. âIâve been that out of it?â
âOh, Kirsten. I think a tornado could blow through the middle of the bar, and youâd hardly notice. Something is clearly bothering you. Are you mad that I left you at the fight? I thought it would be fine once Hawk saw you.
